Now available in paperback, Thielicke's widely-acclaimed, three-volume series constructs a system of Christian theology that is responsive to the needs and questions of the modern age. The product of a lifetime of scholarship, The Evangelical Faithconstitutes a comprehensive dogmatic of the Christian faith. It deploys the same breadth of insight and clarity of analysis that has already secured Thielicke's reputation as one of the leading Christian thinkers of the 20th century.
Vol. 1: Prolegomena: The Relation of Theology to Modern Thought-Forms. The first volume divides contemporary theological thought into two kinds. The first is essentially Cartesian, reflecting an emphasis on the 'I' who is to receive the message of the gospel. By contrast, the second focuses on the message itself, refusing to allow the 'I' to limit its nature or its effectiveness. Thielicke considers how both approaches attempt conscientiously to address the Christian message to the contemporary world— and he seeks to establish clear agendas for both.
