Loving God in the Darkness is the story of a life deeply affected by tragedy—grief, debilitating illness, and divorce. Layne Wallace describes his journey, chronicling his longing for God's presence to comfort him and help make sense of the pain. While the book describes darkness, its aim is hope. Ultimately, Loving God in the Darkness is an account of how to love God when one can no longer sense God's presence.
Reviews
If your personal journey has had periods of personal brokenness, pain, and deep darkness, Layne Wallace’s book will give you common ground and a healing guide through lament to faith. The great current relevance of this book is not only in its candor and insight, but that it is a pastor’s journey. I am convinced that accounts of personal pain are inherently cathartic, and this one must have been. But the excellent writing and theological rich- ness of these reflections will expand the capacities of empathy and the faith of any reader. With pain among dear ones all around us there is significant help and encouragement here.

Layne Wallace writes in this volume reflections of raw honesty as he and his family faced the darkness during the suffering and death of a beloved family member. He shares the emotions and feelings that hurting souls encounter when faced with such loss. Though his grief profound, Wallace came to see the care of God in new and meaningful ways. This book will be helpful counsel to all who journey in the darkness of grief and seek God’s comfort.

Authentic and profound, hopeful and empowering. Layne invites us, with unflinching honesty, to a story he lived during an intense season of his life. At times depleted and barren but yet full of grit to labor over questions about God and ask questions to God that ultimately carried him to restoration, Layne’s story empowers us, should we embrace the lessons found within, to hold to Christ no matter what foes arise in our journey. I’m looking forward to my second read-through!
