Challenges for Today's Living is not a commentary on 1 Corinthians. Instead, the book seeks to follow the thematic approach the apostle Paul used in his letter to the church at Corinth. Tuck explores at least ten of these themes and examines how they can be applied to the ways believers can serve Christ through the local church today and the challenges we face in daily life. Among these themes, he addresses our present sins, social and ethical issues, basic theological beliefs, guidance for worship and stewardship, and the quest for the high road in our religious journey.
Reviews
This is an extraordinary book. As a pastor, I often preached from Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, but I now realize that I could have done it far more effectively if I had had Bill Tuck’s book to help me understand what Paul was saying and why he was saying it the way he did. I salute you, Bill, for what is perhaps the finest book you ever wrote! And my advice to every pastor is to get this book and read it as soon as you have it in your hands.

I am downright eager to say a good word for this highly relevant book on 1 Corinthians. It is written not only intelligently but with the creativity of a homiletics professor and seasoned pastor. This is not merely a good addition to your bookcase as a reference work but also a dynamic resource for a series of sermons or lessons or personal devotions. It is informed not only exegetically for the text but also the times. This book speaks to the ethics of Paul with its spectacular practicality and to the theology of Paul, who was among other things a gifted intellectual.

Dr. William Tuck’s lovely book about 1 Corinthians, like a Swiss army knife, has several possible uses. You can read it for its practical advice about Christian living. You can read it as devotional meditations. You can read it to learn what Bible scholars have been saying about St. Paul’s great letter. You can read it as an anthology of delightful stories, some touching and others humorous. You can read it for its careful analysis of complex issues the church faces today. I recommend it wholeheartedly to ministers and laypeople alike.

Our present day is marked by massive faction and division. The various threads that once held our society together have become irreparably frayed. No part of life has been immune to its effects, unfortunately not even the church. Nonetheless, Christians possess the inspired words of the Apostle Paul, who spoke God’s truth to a similarly challenged people on the verge of seeing their witness for Christ grind to a halt. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is a trove of both theological and practical counsel for a people who had much to offer Christ’s cause in the first century world. In Challenges for Today’s Living, Bill Tuck unpacks the themes that Paul employed to get the believers in that strategic city back on track in pursuit of “the more excellent way.” Whether one comes to these studies as a struggling disciple or as a member of a local congregation that is reeling from the difficulties that inevitably befall communities of all types, Tuck’s insights into Paul’s direction will provide much-needed encouragement and inspiration and, more importantly, a path forward toward a reclaimed future in which everyone finds his or her place as a valued member of the Body of Christ.

Challenges for Today’s Living: Studies in 1 Corinthians by William Powell Tuck follows in the impressive train of his nearly forty books by doing just what the title says: the volume calls on us to meet the challenges of modern life by heeding St. Paul’s divine wisdom offered to folks in the troubled and troubling early church in Corinth. Dr. Tuck in turn guides us in our day in words that are practical, urgent, and totally relevant. As reader, you will come away a better person, and most certainly with a better understanding of this “favorite” of New Testament letters.
