MACON, Georgia June 13, 2006 Smyth & Helwys today announced the publication of a five-volume commentary set written by Cecil Sherman. The series compiles the best of Cecil Sherman’s writings from the Formations Commentary. The Cecil Sherman Formations Commentary will be premiered at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship meeting in Atlanta in late June. The five volumes cover Genesis to Revelation.
Cecil Sherman has served as the primary commentary writer for the Formations series of adult Bible study for nearly fifteen years. Over the years, he has offered insight through nearly 700 sessions across 45 issues of the commentary and addressed an extensive amount of Scripture. His work with Formations has made him a fixture in thousands of Sunday school classes. Sherman presently serves as visiting professor of pastoral ministries at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.
Mark McElroy, now senior editor for Smyth & Helwys, for many years edited the Formations Commentary. He sums up the enormous contribution made by Cecil’s commentaries: “Cecil Sherman’s Formations commentary has always been a labor of love on Cecil’s partlove for the Bible and love for those who endeavor to shape themselves according to the truth of Scripture. In spite of his enormous pedigree and the depth of his experience, Cecil wrote each week as if he was required to earn again the right to be heard. Cecil’s commentary has been a gift. And, like the gospel truth to which it pointed, it is a gift that keeps giving.”
David Cassady, executive vice president and publisher, commented on Sherman’s writing, “Cecil has a gift for taking passages that might otherwise seem complex and distant and helping us discover them as rich and engaging. He approaches the Bible as a good friend, expecting each encounter with the text to deepen our relationship with and understanding of Scripture. It is easy to read his commentary and feel almost like we are sitting with him on the front porch, sharing a pitcher of sweet tea and discussing life, the Bible, and faith. It’s a wonderful way to read the Bible.”
