Avoid Getting Stuck in a Rut
By Millard Fuller
All of us are creatures of habit. We wake up in the morning, brush our teeth, comb our hair, dress, eat breakfast, and drive to work. Routines differ, of course, for different people. But we all have routines. Day after day and week after week we do pretty much the same things, over and over.
Routines are not all bad. And good habits are desirable. Systematically brushing teeth, drinking orange juice, servicing the car, exercising every day, going to worship regularly--all of that and more--are good. But a life that is totally lived by routine is boring. Such a life leads to a dulling of the mind and senses.
My spiritual mentor, Clarence Jordan, said that one can get in a rut in life that ultimately leads to a grave. It happens like this. First a person walks in the same place for a long time and a path is cut. Then, over a longer period of time, walking always in the same place, the path deepens until it becomes a rut. Finally, walking in the rut for a long time deepens until there is no way out because the rut is too deep and one discovers that the rut has become a grave. You see, the only difference between a path, a rut, and a grave is depth. Getting off “the beaten path” avoids the “grave” experience. That’s a good thing!
