What Do You Want? John 1:35-39
Excerpt from Becoming Fire Return in your imagination to the setting of yesterday. Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth, has caught your attention. What is so compelling about Jesus that you want to meet him? Is it the way he approaches the people in the village, giving dignity and respect to everyone he encounters? Is it the way he looks at people and the way he touches them with compassion that draws you to him? Could it be his look of tenderness and love that captures your heart? Your teacher and friend, John, notices that you are captivated by Jesus. Whereas your attention has been focused on John's teachings, now you are drawn to someone else. "That is Jesus, the Lamb of God," you hear John say, and suddenly your attention is pulled back to the man beside you. John knows that you will leave him now, and you feel the pain of separation. You look down because you don't know what to say. All kinds of feelings flood your heart. As you look up into Jesus' eyes, you realize that he is letting you go. He who could hold on to you is giving you permission to follow another teacher, and to sit at the feet of someone else. "This is the way it is supposed to be," he tells you. "My job was to prepare the way for you to be with him."
